'The Cool Mom' is my solo performance from Storyscapes (2024).
Storyscapes features day-in-the-life stories of library patrons and the free resources they use, expressed through aerial, dance, and theater. From puzzling daredevils to brave, howling youngsters, we will share many stories—and maybe yours, too.
'The Cool Mom' is a semi-autobiographical piece set to the poetry of J. Hope Stein and 'The Nursery' by Clint Mansell from the film Moon. This was my second work inspired by Ms. Stein. Her book, Little Astronaut. This collection of poems perfectly encapsulates the experiences of parenting a young child. This is also my second interpretation of Mr. Mansell's, 'The Nursery.' The song is played at a moment in the film where the character's existence is questioned.
Both artists explore identity within a parental framework, which informed my character. 'The Cool Mom' is initially dysregulated; their movements are frantic and overresponsive with an inward gaze. It's only at the state of exhaustion that the Mom surrenders and accepts not what should be but what is.
