I created Positively Toxic! for Satellite Dance's second production of Dark Side of the Moon. The piece was born of a series of improvisational aerial dance sessions while managing an acute injury and chronic illness. While videos of choreographic phrases were sent to the artists ahead of time, the piece was constructed over a single weekend!
Positively Toxic! is an exploration of Masking, or the strategies people use to conform to social expectations. Inspired by the Apple show, Pluribus, the piece also illustrates how Masking can be contagious within a group dynamic. Whether it is a group of friends, a workplace, or a family, the work encourages the individual to pause and reflect on whether they may be perpetuating Masking within their communities.
As with all of my choreographic endeavors, the work I create is both site and person-specific. Each piece is carefully constructed to support and celebrate the space we occupy and the individual artist’s experience.
